Counseling Services

Frequently, a patient’s illness stems from emotional and psychological issues that are rooted in family problems, cultural prejudices, property disagreements between family members, extramarital affairs, and domestic abuse.  Some patients are in the hospital due to attempted suicide, having lost their value of life.

Through the Counseling Centre, Mercy Hospital looks to holistically care for its patients by meeting their psychological and spiritual needs in addition to treating their physical ailments. Every morning and evening, the hospital chaplain makes rounds throughout the hospital to check in and offer free counseling to staff, patients, and their loved ones.  For suicide patients, he attempts to reestablish the preciousness of life in their minds and hearts.  90% of the time, the patients just need someone to talk to, and since the chaplain speaks Hindi, Bengali, and English, he can converse with patients in their native tongue and be the comforting presence they need.  Additionally, upon request, the chaplain will make house calls to offer advice and encouragement.
