Mercy Hospital, Calcutta, and Christian Medical College, Vellore, have signed an MoU to conduct distance education programmes for doctors with basic medicine degrees.  On completion of the degree, the doctors will be provided a postgraduate dimploma in family medicine by the Vellore Institute.

A.K. Jana, the associate director of CMC Vellore, said the two-year programme could enable general practitioners to manage more cases so that referral becomes less necessary.  Teachers from CMC Vellore would provide training to 25 doctors from Bengal and Jharkhand for a period of 10 days.
